Special rules for adjective declension
For adjectives that already have an ending with -e, the -e of the ending is dropped.
Examples:

weise (Nominativ): Er war ein weiser, alter Mann.
Adjectives with the ending -el
Adjectives with the ending -el lose the -e- in the stem.

Nominativ: der dunkle Mantel – ein dunkler Mantel
Adjectives ending in -er
Adjectives with the ending -er also lose the -e- in the stem, but only if the ending follows a double vowel.
Examples: Ending -er after double vowel
teuer (Nominativ): der teure Mantel – ein teurer Mantel
sauer (Nominativ): der saure Apfel – ein saurer Apfel
Example: ending -er after a double consonant
bitter (Nominativ): die bittere Schokolade – eine bittere Schokolade
sicher (Nominativ): das sichere Land – ein sicheres Land
